I am very happy to hear the verdict of Nirbhaya’s case that was out a few days back. After a five long years, Nirbhaya got justice. Though she is no more with us, but today actually she might be resting in peace. Nirbhaya’s parents got what they wanted for their daughter’s justice.
The Indian law does not permit to publicise the rape victim’s name and so the victim(Jyoti Singh) was named as Nirbhaya which means fearless. On 16th December 2012, an incident that took place was broadly denounced in India as well as abroad. A 23 years old physiotherapy intern Jyoti Singh was gang raped in a moving private bus and severely tormented by six men. She was travelling with one of her male friends who was beaten with an iron rod by those rapists. The rapists then threw them out of the moving bus. They were found by a passerby who then informed the Delhi police. The police took them to a hospital where later Nirbhaya was kept on mechanical ventilation. The doctors found various injury marks all over her body. One of the accused even confessed that a rope like object (assumed to be her intestines) was pulled out of the woman by other accused in the bus. Two blood-stained metal rods were retrieved from the bus and medical staff confirmed that “”it was this object which was used to penetrate her private parts, uterus and digestive organs to wipe off traces of semen, which could have been used as an evidence incase the victim survived the brutality.” Eleven days after the incident the woman was transferred to one of the Singapore hospitals for emergency treatment, but due to her severe injuries she died two days later.
Remembering that incident once again, still enrages me. I feel that any punishment given to those accused will not suffice. They are animals in the form of humans and I feel like abusing them repetitively. I feel these monsters should have been castrated and asked to live with that pain forever. Because the pain through which any girl goes through after such gruesome incident is beyond our imagination. She will be reminded of that incident again and again until she gets the justice. There are many girls, women out there who are still waiting for their justice and are not aware after how many days or years they will get justice.
On May 5th, the Supreme court upheld Delhi High Court Death Sentence verdict in the case of Nirbhaya incident and rejected the mercy plea of the four remaining rapists(One of the rapists had committed suicide inside the Tihar jail and one was a teenager who was given three years of life imprisonment as he comes under the Juvenile justice) saying this is the rarest of the rare crime that shook the conscience of the entire nation.
